KOAA Building Structural Evaluation (Mt. Carmel Veterans Service Center)

J.R. Harris & Company provided comprehensive structural engineering services for the KOAA Building (now the Mt. Carmel Veterans Service Center) in Colorado Springs, CO, focusing on identifying and addressing issues related to differential settlement and foundation performance. The building had experienced significant differential settlement, with over 9 inches of elevation difference across the structure. The project involved a detailed structural assessment to evaluate the building’s condition, including analysis of foundation piers and structural framing impacted by settlement. The team coordinated with geotechnical investigations to determine the causes of foundation movement, which included fill settlement and slope stability issues. JRH developed underpinning solutions using micropiers to stabilize and relevel the foundation as well as slope stability reinforcement with ground anchors. Additionally, J.R. Harris & Company conducted a risk analysis, offering guidance on monitoring strategies and maintenance recommendations to ensure the building’s long-term structural integrity. This project showcases the firm’s expertise in diagnosing complex structural issues and designing cost-effective solutions for existing buildings with challenging geotechnical conditions.
