Summary:

J.R. Harris & Company (JRH) was retained by AECOM to perform a custom condition assessment of an existing, below-grade sludge grit-basin tank that had been repurposed for several years to store acidic material. This use was inconsistent with the original design intent. Our investigation studied the condition of the tank to determine the extent and nature of chemical attack on the concrete. We also prepared repair design drawings and specifications for the restoration of the concrete tank so that it could safely be restored to its intended use that involved less acidic material. Our investigation included extracting concrete cores for laboratory examination, including petrographic analysis that was performed for us by an industry partner. JRH also subcontracted directly to a support contractor to help construct temporary structures inside the tank to facilitate our inspection access, and to plan and execute site safety procedures, including lockout-tagout and permit-confined space entry requirements.
